The reels move the way tape moves
The supply reel empties and the take-up reel fills as the track plays. Their speeds are not decorative: angular velocity follows the radius of the pack, so the reels turn faster as they empty, like a real transport. The tape pack itself is a photograph of a real wound reel, clipped rather than redrawn, so the layers never look painted.
VU meters that measure
The two meters read the signal in decibels with proper VU ballistics: fast attack, slow return, a needle that overshoots slightly on transients. They are lit like the meters on a seventies deck and respond to the actual audio, not to a fake animation.
Varispeed
The speed slider runs the machine from half speed to well above, and the mechanism follows: slow the tape and the reels slow with it, the pitch drops, the meters breathe more slowly. Combine it with the slowed + reverb program for the classic slowed sound on any track you own.
On the Mac, a full window
The Mac version gives the reel deck the whole window, with the analog desk sliding up underneath, thirteen audio-reactive backdrops and stickers you can place on the reels that turn with them. See MP95 for Mac.
Frequently asked questions
Is the reel-to-reel player free?
On Android it is free. On iPhone, iPad and Mac it plays for a free preview whenever you want a listen; unlimited use is part of MP95 Pro, along with the digital, click-wheel and disc players.
Do the VU meters react to the music?
Yes. They read the level of the audio in real time with VU ballistics. They are not a looping animation.
