What is in the chain
- Drive and saturation: the soft compression and harmonics of tape pushed a little hot.
- Wow and flutter: slow and fast pitch movement from an imperfect transport, the thing that makes sustained notes on cassette sound alive.
- Hiss: the noise floor of tape, kept low.
- Crackle and rumble: the surface noise and motor rumble of a record.
- Width, sub, tone: stereo image, low-end weight and top-end tilt.
- A five-band EQ, volume boost, slowed + reverb and 8D sit on the same desk.
Presets that know what they are
Each machine has its own preset: the cassette deck's is soft (a few dB of drive, gentle flutter, a whisper of hiss), the turntable adds crackle and rumble, the reel deck is cleaner and wider. Fourteen factory programmes cover the rest, from Flat and Vocal to Lo-Fi, Tape and Vinyl, and three memory slots hold your own. Hold PGM to store.
Or nothing at all
The analog switch bypasses the entire chain. Lossless stays lossless, and the machine is only a look. Your setting is remembered per machine.
Why native
The chain is written in C++ and fed decoded PCM with no copies in between, so it costs almost nothing in battery and adds no latency you can hear. Switching machines swaps the parameters without stopping the track.
Frequently asked questions
Is the tape sound a real effect or just a filter?
A real-time chain with saturation, wow and flutter, hiss and EQ, rendered natively. It is not a static filter.
Can I hear my files untouched?
Yes. The analog switch bypasses the chain.
Is the analog chain free?
The cassette and vinyl presets are part of the free machines. The full desk with every knob, 8D, slowed and the memory slots is part of MP95 Pro.
